A pop culture recap 2010 addition.

Raise your hand if you did not know I am a pop culture junkie. Anyone? Anyone? *silence and limp arms abound* Here are some of my good bad and ugly moments of 2010.

* If you are reading this in the notes on facebook please go down to the end of the page and hit view original post so you can see the pic and video content.*

Favorite Movie (theaters). The Twilight Saga Eclipse. I can count on my hands how many movies I saw in the theaters this year. The third installment of the Saga was the only one I saw on opening day ( Midnight showing) and found myself anticipating in any way. The movie industry as a whole disappoints me. "Event" movies are non-eventful and rarely do they get me excited. The Indie's and art house movies I covet rarely play in my area ( or in one inconvenient theater) This installment was darker and a bit more edgy than it's predecessors. I enjoyed the cinematography and the CGI of the wolves. It was also better acted and I had far fewer cringe worthy dialog moments. I am a Team Switzerland girl so I was happy to watch both boys battle it out for the hand of fair Bella. I loved the chemistry between both couples and can totally understand the issue Bella had with choice. I know that in the end Eddie gets the girl but that didn't make the tingle of Jake getting a smooch any less for me. I was glad he took his shot in such a majestic setting. Any time spent in the company of the Saga crew is time well spent.

Favorite Movie ( DVD) The Town. Ben Affleck's star does not shine as bright as it has in the past but he may have found a niche for himself behind the camera. Gone Baby Gone was a marvelous complex rich tapestry of a movie and The Town was woven with the same thread. I am impressed by his eye as a director. He has the ability to make the gritty side of life in this country sympathetic and you want to follow their stories to there conclusion. Ben was also the star of this movie and gave a wonderful performance. This movie should go a long way in reestablishing some of the credibility he lost in the the early 2000's.

Best Casting: Xavier Samuel as Riley in Eclipse. There has never been a man more perfect for the role (chiseled face, pale creamy skin) of lead astray newborn vamp. I was excited from the moment I saw him and I was not disappointed. The scene where he came up out of the water was eerie and chilling. I had hoped that maybe somehow Riley would not end up dust but even the movie makers wouldn't change the end that much.

Favorite Album. Night train, Keane. Again my actual CD buying was quite limited. I purchased more singles ( I posted a top 20 singles list in a previous blog. I am already second guessing my choices) but pound for pound track for track I am 100% in love with Keane. When I want to be inspired I listen to Keane. When I want to find a release for emotions I keep bottled up to long I listen to Keane. When I want to think and organize my mind I listen to Keane. Any album they make will be tops on my list.

Favorite breakout Star. Bruno Mars. Co-writer (and hook bringer on the 1st two) of Nothing on you with B.O.B., Billionaire with Travie Mccoy and Cee-Lo's F*ck you as well as producing, writing and releasing two primo singles of his own Just the way you are and Grenade of his first Solo Album Doo Wops and Hooligans. He is nominated for seven Grammy awards and while it seems like he hit over night he has been working long and hard writing and producing for other artists in the hope he would get a chance to shine on his own. I am all for someone who pays his dues making it now do me a favor Mr. Hernandez (real name Peter Hernandez) stay away from the drugs and learn to fly high soley on your success!

Favorite Music Video: Tighten Up, The Black Keys.

Made me truly laugh out loud when I saw it.

Biggest Guilty Pleasure. Kesha. I have tried NOT to like her cause when I see her I think to myself " I really should NOT admit to liking her" but every single she has put out is on my Ipod and I can not help myself. I bop along in the car, at the house, in the stores. If I hear her I do not turn away. She is my own personal train wreck and I can not help but rubberneck every time she passes through.

Worst reoccurring musical theme(s): The stutter note in songs and videos (ala Adam Lambert If I had you).  Jason Derulo calling out his own name on all of his tracks. Please for the love of God let these two things go away.

Best Musical performance(s) Florence and the Machine performing Dog Days are over at the VMA's. A ethereal piece of musical perfection.

Gwyneth Paltrow performing Country Strong at the CMA's. I know that a lot of die hard old school country music lovers will looked up their nose at a Movie Star gracing their stage but guess what. You opened that door for cross over performers in your genre in the 90's and it can not be closed now. You need to embrace this type of crossover act as for many it is the only thing that interests them in Country today. Knowing that Gwyn was going to grace the stage was the only reason I watched the show and in the end it was one of the best music award shows I had seen in a long time. I was introduced to new artists and some who I have heard of but never paid attention to in the past. I thought her performance was strong and heartfelt and well worth waiting three hours for. It was a you go girl moment for sure!!

Worst Musical Performance. Just about everybody on the American Music Awards. With a couple of exceptions. ( Pink who was the highlight of the show and Kid Rock) everyone had moments that made me cringe. Off key or off kilter most of the acts sucked. I don't know if there was something wrong behind the scenes but the sour notes that came off that stage were worse than American Idol auditions and these people get paid millions. None of them would ever get my money for a live concert.

Favorite TV Show
The Good Wife. I am sure that this is not what most of my peeps thought I would say but it is the truth. When I think of the show that is the most compelling, the most constantly well written and the most riveting I think of this CBS Drama. My favorite WILL she or won't she triangle ( oh how I love you Josh Charles) and two of my very favorite characters on TV in Kalinda (played by Archie Panjabi who one an Emmy for one of the absolute BEST characters on TV) and Eli Gold ( played by Alan Cumming) who plays each and every scene he's in with finesse and panache

Best New TV Show Blue Bloods. A rich family filled drama set within law enforcement in New York City. Tom Selleck playing the stoic patriarch to his grown children. Two sons who have joined him in the police department (one son has died in the line of duty) and his daughter who is an Assistant District Attorney. There are cases shown from the POV of each character but it is the time spent around the family dinning table that really hits home. The web that is weaved within the complications of family life. Donnie Wahlberg is the break out star of this show for me. I have been an admire of him since I was a teen and have watched him in his previous TV roles ( gone to soon Boomtown) but here he takes center stage and runs with it. There was a time when I watched nothing on CBS but today many of the best shows on TV call the network home.

Most disappointing TV show ( but I still watched every bit of it) True Blood. I understand that the show will not be the books. I do not need the show to be the books but I do need the show to be coherent have a clear concise plot line and make the best use possible of the characters they call regulars. The biggest issue? Twelve freaking episodes does NOT a season make. This is a trend that I attribute to SATC and it infuriates me that so many cable shows have followed suit and with each "season" it becomes more and more the norm. How are you supposed to showcase your regulars plus all of the newbies you choose to bring in for the seasons plot line. Answer? In the case of TB you don't. I thought Season two was disjointed, rushed and incomplete but at least in season two there were orgies. Season three's only highlight for me. The introduction of Alcide. There was not nearly enough of Joe's Wolfman for me and now that he is a series regular he will probably been seen even less. From what I have read so far this fall they have added like five more supporting cast members. *sigh*

Most shocking TV moments...

Kate goes blowing in the wind on White Collar. After a season of will he or won't he (re)get his girl. Neil sees the light at the end of the runway only to watch his beloved blow up in front of his eyes.

The First five minutes of almost every episode of Bones. Do yourself a favor and NEVER be eating ANYTHING until after the body has been discovered and brought back to the Jeffersonian.... Every time I think they can NOT top themselves in the gross out department they do!!!

My Bloody Valentine. Supernatural Season 5 Episode 14. Possibly the most disgusting few minutes of TV I have ever seen. My jaw was on the floor that they got away with that scene on network TV...

Most disappointing TV moment... Series finale of Lost... After six seasons and numerous attempts by the writers to explain what the hell the island was and where the hell the castaways were I still have no idea what the f*ck happened... I know what they say happened but I just don't buy it... Not for one moment....

Best TV Vampire. Stefan Salvatore. He may not be the wit of the show but he is the heart and this year (season 2) the writers have actually given Paul something to work with and in doing so they have given the character a real voice and the chance to chew up some scenery of his own. Conveying raw emotion that one believes and feels in their bones is a Paul Wesley specialty and it is his more subtle reigned in portrayal of a century +(aged) vampire that I am drawn to. Some may find him boring but I prefer to think of him as sane. He plays the character that I have loved most of my life just as I envisioned him and I am thankful every Thursday night for the beauty that he brings to the part.

Worst TV Vampire. Franklin Mott True Blood. Okay this guy makes Damon Salvatore look like a Boy Scout. Totally 100% creepy in every imaginable way. He was obsessive and abusive and just plan nuts. Tara was torchered. I'd have cut all my hair off and gone a bit batty to after spending any time with that crazy MO FO... Glad he was made goo cause the fact he came back from the dead twice was once (well probably twice) to many.

Best TV Werewolf. Alcide Herveaux. True Blood. One of the best pieces of casting I have seen in a very long time. I have seen Joe around for quite a while but it was this role that put him in the middle of my radar. Tall, stacked and sexy as hell. He is as sensitive as he is strong and well probably more mushy on the inside than he would ever want anyone to know about. I find that combination of lover and fighter extremely appealing. He can be my contractor on any job on any day at any time. I pray that I see more and more and more of him at TB moves forward and I hope that he gets a little Sookie action for all his troubles. The only reason to watch this season of the show for sure!!

Worst TV Werewolf. Jules on TVD.  Your threats fall short and have little meaning when YOU BIT THE WRONG DAMN VAMPIRE YOU STUPID C**T.  As DD would say (What a) Dick move. Wolfgirl is destined to be decomposing next to her man Mason by February.

Best PUT IT IN YOUR PIPE and SMOKE IT TV Moment : The supposed "Delena" kiss on the season one finale of The Vampire Diaries. I KNEW that that was not Elena and so did everyone in my neighborhood. I jumped screamed and shouted at every person all over the country who had the audacity to believe that it was Elena and that includes Damon....
*in case you all did not know that is NOT Elena*

Best Comedic moment. Jimmy Fallon's take on the man who plays the sparkliest vampire in the world. Robert Pattinson's BOTHERED!!! He hates every holiday and has absolutely NO problem throwing his girlfriend out of his tree. The episode where the real deal showed up was Priceless!!

Worst Comedic moment. Conan verses Jay and NBC. An all around ugly ordeal that cost the head of NBC his job and well should have. They never should have taken the reigns away from Jay to begin with but once the decision was made they should have stuck with it and given Conan the chance he deserved. The ten o'clock hour was NOT a good idea for Jay and it messed with the entire NBC schedule which pissed me off more than the whole comedy scandal. Hopefully all is right in the world with Jay back at the tonight show and Conan heading up his new show on TBS.

Pop Culture TV Fads that I simply fail to get:

Teen Mom: I understand that there are girls in "trouble" all over this world but I really do not understand why putting them on TV is a good idea. They have been on covers of magazines and one beat up her baby daddy on camera and spent some time in the slammer. What exactly are they supposed to be learning by being on this show? The men and woman who put these children on TV should be sleeping less at night for their explotative programing.

Glee: I hate musicals. I hate hearing about this musical. I hate seeing everyone from this musical everywhere. I can not wait for it to be over. I would thankfully request all my peeps to STOP asking me to give it a try. Anything and everything to do with it makes me want to scream!!!!

Jersey Shore: I do not blame the boys and girls from the shore from getting theirs but I find that they become bigger and bigger caricatures of themselves with each passing personal appearance, promotion or money making opportunity. Sookie being lowered down like a giant hamster in a big plastic ball for New Years should be a low point but I doubt that it even begins to scrap the bottom of the barrel. The thing I find the most amusing is how most of the people from Jersey who were so up in arms at the shows inception have now jumped on the bandwagon and embraced the overly oiled orange crew as if they were family.

The Vampire Diaries Dirty Damon/Delena contingency: My rants on this subject have been many. They have been vulgar and no holds barred. I will spare those of you who fall into this category from the smack down. I will say this most of this group of fans frighten me. I am not sure if many of them are in their right minds. I want to say though that I know in no certain terms that Damon's soul, his heart or his redemption will not be found in Elena's vagina. If anything her hoo hoo will be his downfall. Brotherly sloppy seconds are never a good thing. My hope is that the "oh so sexy misunderstood" Damon finds his own DAMNED woman and leaves his brothers girls alone.

Best Red Carpet Moment : Clair Danes in Armani Prive at the Emmy's. I watch the award shows more often than not for the fashion. What everyone is wearing often is more important since many times the people that I want to be nominated for awards are sitting at their homes in their PJ's like me. Every once in a while a star puts together a look that Wow's me and sticks in my brain. This year that look was Claire at the Emmy's. Whenever I think of the year in red carpet fashion it that look I think of first.
Oh and having a husband like Hugh Dancy on your arm is the very best kind of accessory!

Worst Red Carpet Moment: To many to count but I will go with Lady Gaga's meat dress at the VMA's for the same reasons as above. When I think of OMG WTH were they thinking moments that look is what comes to mind (and makes me want steak)

Most coveted celebrity accessory. Blake Lively's coral and turquoise earrings worn at the Channel Fall 2010 Show in Paris. In every picture I have seen they all say who makes her dress who makes who shoes but never who made the earrings which is the only thing about the whole ensemble I cared about. They are absolutely amazing. Stunning and unforgettable. I want them..

I am sure there are more high and low points I should cover ( if you have any categories you'd like me to tackle please let me know) but for now I think this is the end.... Until Next year.
